Diverting Runoff from Sources of Contamination

The purpose of this program is to reduce the amount of contaminated runoff from manure storage and exercise yards by diverting clean rain and snow melt water away from sources of contamination to a satisfactory outlet. The program also promotes water conservation by using rainwater collection systems for alternate water uses.

Funding

Landowners within the Lake Simcoe watershed may qualify for grants of 50 per cent of project costs for eligible projects, to a maximum of $2,500. Additional funds may be available from other environmental grant funding sources. LSRCA watershed coordinators will ensure that you are made aware of all the grant funding programs available to you.

What projects are eligible?

  • Eavestroughs or clean water diversion structures (such as berms and ditches) that direct water away from barnyards, exercise yards, and/or manure storage areas.
  • Any other permanent technique to keep rain and snow from becoming contaminated by manure, or adding to the volume of contaminated runoff.
  • Rainwater collection systems.

What costs may be covered?

  • Materials and labour associated with an approved project
  • Tile outlet protection, including rip-rap or appropriate armour material, filter cloth, and rodent guards.

Conditions

  • Downspouts located in areas which livestock can access must be made of schedule 40 PVC (or stronger materials) and be well secured to prevent dislodging.
  • All clean water diversion projects must discharge clean water away from any source of contamination, and not pose other hazards such as soil erosion.
  • Once completed, the ongoing maintenance and associated costs of the project are the responsibility of the landowner.
  • If you have an outstanding violation with the LSRCA or any other regulatory agency, you may not be eligible.
