Urban Forest Studies

Have you ever wondered how much carbon a forest can capture? Or how much energy your backyard trees help you save each year? What about the amount of stormwater runoff trees prevent in your town?

These are some of the questions explored in the York Region urban forest studies.

To better understand and manage urban forests, the Conservation Authority partnered with York Region to conduct studies in local municipalities within the Lake Simcoe watershed. The studies examine canopy cover, tree species composition, invasive species spread, tree and soil health, ecosystem services, and project forest growth. They also help municipalities track their progress toward meeting their canopy cover targets. Conducted every ten years, these studies reveal how urban forests change over time, ensuring they remain healthy and resilient.

In the spring and summer of 2023, our field staff collected data on 3,485 trees across 365 plots in Newmarket and Stouffville, followed by data collection in 2024 on 5,830 trees across 258 plots in East Gwillimbury and Georgina.

We compiled and analyzed the data into a detailed technical report, with key findings summarized in three factsheets for each municipality.
