The Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority

managing milkhouse waste

Protect water quality on your farm

Properly managing milkhouse wastewater helps protect nearby streams, lakes, and groundwater from contamination. By treating and containing wastewater on your farm, you can reduce nutrient runoff, improve water quality, and support a healthier environment for your operation and the surrounding community.

Milkhouse waste management

50% of costs, up to $5,000

This program supports better management of milkhouse wastewater to protect water quality in nearby streams, lakes, and groundwater.

  • Priority will be given to projects that are within 100m of surface water
  • Storage within an existing or proposed manure storage system or in a separate unit
  • Processing in a sediment tank and stone-filled treatment trench system
  • Water reducing sinks
  • Innovative projects meeting this category’s objective will be considered.

Projects must meet current Construction and Siting protocols and other requirements under the Nutrient Management Act, 2002 (Ontario Regulation 267/03). Systems shall adhere to local municipal by-laws and provincial Acts.

Systems utilizing a sediment tank and stone filled treatment trenches are required to have appropriate soil tests completed and be sized accordingly and must include a provision to prevent the first rinse cycle from being discharged to the tank.

Systems proposed as part of a liquid manure storage facility must provide at least 240-day capacity for the wastewater produced.
